- For more than a century, the Custer Battlefield National
- Monument in southeastern Montana has served as a memorial to the
- "Last Stand," in which Lieut. Colonel George Armstrong Custer
- and more than 250 men of the 7th U.S. Cavalry met their death
- in a fierce battle with Sioux and Cheyenne warriors on June 25,
- 1876. Last week Congress approved a bill to rename the park the
- Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument. The bill would
- also create an Indian memorial there, in recognition that
- Native Americans too fought and died in the clash, which was
- their last major victory against the U.S. Army.
